Senior right midfielder Marissa Lauber, a 2011 first-team All-North Jersey selection, is a strong two-way player. Also lending a hand in the Highlanders' attack are junior center/forward Lauren O'Keefe and senior midfielder Julie Merli. Keying the defense are senior fullback Frankie-Lynn Ferrone, junior sweeper Nora Verhoff, senior fullback Sami Baratta and junior midfielder Maryclare Mastriano. Senior Paulina Marino is one of the top goalkeepers in Bergen County.
NO. HIGHLANDS FIELD HOCKEY COACH GETS 100TH VICTORY
ALLENDALE - Head coach Rich Smith earned his 100th career win Saturday when Northern Highlands defeated Hackensack, 5-0, in a Northeast Field Hockey Conference Division 2 game.
HIGHLANDS READY FOR TOURNEY TIME
Second-seeded Northern Highlands had defeated seventh-seeded Dwight-Englewood in the BCT quarterfinals Oct. 9. The Highlanders used a goal and assist by senior right wing Catherine Peebles and six saves in the cage by Paulina Marino to eliminate a determined Demarest team in the semifinals. Highlands defeated Ramsey in the past two BCT finals and in 2008 the Highlanders beat Demarest to claim the county crown. In all, Northern Highlands has earned seven Bergen championships since 1998.
Where rivals see eye to eye
\"Before there was this type of opportunity, the kids didn't really know each other,\" said Northern Highlands coach Rich Smith, who oversees the Express. \"It's great to see when the other bus arrives [before games] that the kids are saying hello to each other. It adds a lot of sportsmanship to the game.\" \"They're super pumped to go on this trip,\" Smith said. \"They have the opportunity to get seen by coaches and get recruited by great schools. We have some real high profile players and I think that's going to help us at the tournament we're going to.\" \"It's all about the players and trying to improve the quality of field hockey in Passaic and Bergen counties,\" Smith said. \"It's a fun environment. There is plenty of camaraderie. I think the kids really get along first and play well together on the field second.\"
