Tragic death of student still under investigation
A photo taken one month earlier, on [Miyuki Nakano]'s 20th birthday, is now taped to a post on the northeast corner of 41st and Fraser, alongside flowers and faded Remembrance Day poppies. It was after seeing a green light at this intersection at about 3 p.m. that Miyuki began crossing westbound on 41st. Friend Mariko Sato said Nakano's classmates have not yet decided who will wear her costume. They joked that it will have to be someone very slender -- Nakano swam about 2,000 metres a day. EPISCOPO CHARTS CHAMBER COURSE
Robert Episcopo, new president of the Bethlehem Area Chamber of Commerce, looks forward to the day when he, the Bethlehem Economic Development Corp. director and Downtown Coordinator work out of adjoining offices, with the head of the Downtown Bethlehem Association heading the chamber's retailing efforts. \"The chamber must be the lead organization, the center for business-related activities,\" Episcopo told the Bethlehem Rotary Club yesterday. He outlined the chamber's new strategic plan, touching on nine objectives he'd like to accomplish. *\"We need to have an ongoing and strong business retention program,\" Episcopo said, citing as a model the recent effort between the chamber, BEDCO and other groups trying to keep Sure Fit Products Company from taking 450 jobs and its sewing operation out of the city.
ADRIAN, VALERIE PETERS
Valerie Peters Adrian of Farmington and Mystic, passed away peacefully on Thursday (June 23, 2005). Daughter of Peter and Stella Yonkos of Cambridge, MA, beloved wife of the late Lt. Col. George G. Adrian, Valerie was born on April 13, 1919, in Peabody, MA. Valerie grew up in Cambridge, graduated Valedictorian from Cambridge Latin and Salutatorian, with a Master's degree in English and Psychology from Boston University. She enlisted and was commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy, serving in New York (intelligence) and Washington, D.C. (Personnel Relation and Training Division), during World War II. While stationed in New York Valerie carried the secret \"zig-zag\" codes needed for troop ships to avoid being detected by German subs while leaving New York harbor for combat in Europe. One of these ships, the Isle de France carried her future husband. She married her husband George in Fort Sill, OK on Sept. 15, 1949.

According to DeFuniak Springs Police Department, [Olean Wilson] was the passenger in her own car, driven by James Edward Thompson, of River-view, when the vehicle entered U.S. Highway 90 from 20th Street. Valerie A. Peters, 27, of Hackleburg, Ala., is being held in an Alabama jail in connection with the theft of a pair of earrings from a Seagrove Beach residence, according to the Walton County Sheriff's Depart-ment. At 4 p.m. [Erin] was located near 25.7 north latitude, 58.1 west longitude, or about 600 miles southeast of Bermuda. Erin was moving north-northwest near 8 mph and was expected to continue this motion during the next 24 hours, hurricane specialist Lixion Avila said.
Heifer Project gifts keep on giving // $17,500 spent to help needy worldwide
He and other members of his family made their purchases at a special fair Nov. 30 at Lititz Church of the Brethren. The event was coordinated by Dan Fitzkee of Manheim and by the end of the fair, more than $17,500 was raised to buy animals and plants for needy people in 38 countries. Other youngsters also volunteered at the fair. Katie Yanchuk, 10, and Tessa Fohringer, 11, had been to the fair before, but it was their first time as volunteers selling shares of llamas. The two friends had worked many hours making fuzzy llama holiday ornaments they sold at their stand. The real llamas were going for $150 for a whole animal and $20 for a share. Las Vegans support U.S. troops in Gulf War
World War II veteran Larry Davidson bet a friend at his VFW post a beer that the war would be over by Monday, and given the performance of Saddam Hussein's army in recent days, Davidson fully expects to collect. Davidson doesn't believe defeating Saddam's army and humiliating the Iraqi leader is enough. Allied troops should push on to Baghdad, capture Saddam and put him on trial for war crimes. Davidson, who is the commander of VFW Post 1753, dismissed Saddam's announcement he was withdrawing his forces from Kuwait as \"just another one of his tricks.\"
