يتناول كتاب (ماركوفالدو) والذي قام بتأليفه (إيتالو كالفينو) في حوالي (146) صفحة من القطع المتوسط قصص وقعت أحداثها في مدينة صناعية في الشمال الإيطالي، وقد كتبت المجموعة الأولى منها في بداية الخمسينيات، ولذا فقد صورت إيطاليا الفقيرة، إيطاليا الأفلام الواقعية الجديدة. أما القصص الأخيرة فقد كتبت في منتصف الستينيات بعد أن انتعشت الآمال بالازدهار الاقتصادي.
