هذه الرواية محاولة لتقديم شخصيتين نسائيتين متناقضتين تدوران حول شخصية ثالثة ليست متناقضة بل منقسمة على نفسها بين الجوهر والمظهر وبين الفكر والغريزة كما بين المدينة والريف إنها شخصية أنتونيو المثقف الحائر الذي نجده أولا مع خطيبة تحسب نفسها مثقفة أكثر من الجميع ومتمردة على كل العادات ثم نجده لاحقا في القصة الثانية مع فتاة أخرى على النقيض من الأولى بريئة لكنها ذكية مفعمة بالحب الأنثوي الغريزي وطيبة القلب وميالة إلى التضحية.
