هذا أول كتاب خرافات وقصص خياليّة يؤلّفه لويجي كابوانا كاتب الواقعيّة الحقيقيّة. ومع أنه كتب الكتاب وعيْنه على أحفاده الصغار فإنّ عينَهُ الأخرى بقيت على قرائه البالغين، اعتبر (كان يا ما كان) من أروع أعمال القرن التاسع عشر الأدبية في إيطاليا. يقدّم فيه كابوانا عالماً مليئاً بالجنيات والسحرة والملوك والقصور والغيلان والسحر. لكن لقصصه هذه المليئة بالقوافي والأهازيج الشعبية أساساً متيناً في فولكلور بلده، أي جزيرة صقلية. إن كابوانا يستوعب قصصاً رائعة من بلاده وأرضه ويترجمها على شكل اقتراح أدبي جديد.
