قصة ديكتاتور آخر من أميركا اللاتينية. إلا أنه في هذه الرواية ديكتاتور مثقف متنور. يصادق أكاديميا وشاعرا وأديبا في باريس. ويحضر عروض الأوبرا. ويزين قصره باللوحات الفنية. لكنه على علو ثقافته فاسد مفسد. يفعل كل شيء للبقاء في سدة الحكم. فتحوك المؤامرات ويرسم المسرحيات. لأنه يعرف أنه من دون الكرسي لا يساوي شيئا. أراد كاربنتييه أن يكون عنوان روايته أسلوب المنهج متناظرا مع عنوان كتاب ديكارت : خطاب المنهج. وبينما يضع الفيلسوف نظريته عن المنهج ويديه في الماء البارد. فإن تطبيقها يظهر هنا ساخنا ملتهبا مسوما بالحديد والدم والنار. فيعالج الكاتب الكوبي شخصية الطاغية من الداخل، متأملا نفسيته، داخلا إلى تلافيف عقله، بكتابة جريئة في تصوراتها، غنية بتفاصيلها الخصبة، ومبتكرة في تقنيات سردها.
