تعتبر هذه الرواية من أهم مؤلفات لويجي كابوانا التي تظهر انخراطه في تيار الواقعية الحقيقية وهي تتعرض إلى ظاهرة هجرة فلاحي الجنوب الإيطالي الفقراء إلى أميركا وكانت هذه الهجرة قد تكثفت بشكل واسع أواخر القرن الثامن عشر وأوائل القرن التاسع عشر لتصبح ظاهرة اجتماعية واقتصادية واسعة ولقد أدت تلك الهجرة في نهاية الأمر إلى كثير من الازدهار الاقتصادي في بلدات الهجرة وإلا أنها أدت أيضا إلى بعض التدهور في الإنتاج الزراعي نتيجة هجرة اليد العاملة وكان المؤلف قد وثق بشكل واسع هذه الظاهرة وخاصة في بلدة منشاه مينيو التي سماها في هذه الرواية راباتو وخلص إلى إظهار الآلام التي حتمتها وطورتها إلى جانب ما تمخضت عنه من تطوير اجتماعي وثقافي.
