حفلت العصور الإسلامية بكتابات الجغرافيين والرحالة عن أقاليم المعمورة التي زاروها أو وصلت أخبارها إلى أسماعهم، ولم يكونوا ناقلين أو واصفين ما يشاهدونه بشكل سطحی، بل كانوا ينظرون إلى العالم المحيط بهم نظرة عملية استدعت منهم تسجيل تفاصيل هذه المشاهدات بكل حذافيرها، ومحاولة تعليل بعض ظواهرها الغامضة، وإيضاح مواقفهم من بعض مشاهداتهم التي لم تناسب معتقدهم الديني وعاداتهم الاجتماعية، لذلك اجتهد الدكتور عبد الله إبراهيم في لم شتات هذه المادة المتناثرة وتبويبها وتحليل عناصرها وظواهرها .
