هذا الكتاب بقعة ضوء يلقيها المسرحي رياض عصمت على حقبة من أنشط وأثرى حقب المسرح العربي في المرحلة الواقعة بين أواخر الستينات وأوائل السبعينات، يتناول فيها نماذج من المسرح السوري والمصري واللبناني والعراقي والمغربي والجزائري، مع مقدمات نظرية مكثفة. يجمع الناقد في هذا الكتاب بين تحليل للجانب الأدبي في من الكتابة المسرحية، و بين تفسير للجوانب العلمية المتعلقة بالإخراج والتمثيل والديكور والإضاءة والموسيقا. إنه لا يغلب هذا على ذاك، بل يوازن بين الأدب والفن، من خلال إيمان واضح بضرورة تكامل العناصر في العرض المسرحي، الذي يرى أن عليه أن يزاوج بين التنوير الفكري والمشهدية الممتعة.
