تعتبر رواية (هابيل سانتشيث) التي كتبها أونامونو خلال أصعب مراحل حياته أكثر رواياته مرارة وإثارة حيث تتجلى كآبة وجوده في سوداويتها. تدور الرواية حول صديقين اثنين خواكين مونيغرو وهابيل سانتشيت وتروي من وجهة نظر الأول الذي يخبرنا بمدى معاناته جراء الحسد الذي كان يشعر به طوال حياته تجاه صديقه هابيل يتفاقم هذا الشعور عندما يتزوج هابيل من هيلينا المرأة التي كان يحبها، خواكين حيث يشعر آنذاك بعدم جدوى محاولاته لتجاوز تلك العقبة.
