هذه الرواية هي من أولى الأعمال الأدبية التي تمثل فترة التجديد الأدبي في فنزويلا. تدور أحداث الرواية في جزيرة كوباغوا، وهي جزيرة تقع إلى الجنوب من جزيرة مارغريتا، كانت أول مستوطنة إسبانية في أرض سميت لاحقا فنزويلا. كوباغوا رواية مناهضة للاستعمار، \"وهي مصدر إلهام حقق ذاته، هي رواية تنبأت بفشل المشروع الاستعماري الجديد في ثلاث مشاهد متزامنة : الاقتصادي-السياس ي والإنساني-الاجتماعي، والطبيعي-الجغرافي\" بحسب د.أليخاندرو بروزوال محقق الرواية.
