كان شيشرون قد وضع هذه الأطروحة في عام 44 قبل الميلاد بعنوان \"عن الشيخوخة\"، والتي آثرت ترجمتها إلى العربية تحت عنوان \"في مديح الشيخوخة\"، استنادا إلى ما تضمنته من أفكار... ويعود اهتمامي بأطروحة شيشرون إلى أوائل الستينيات من القرن الماضي، حين كنت أدرس اللغة اللاتينية في جامعة الإسكندرية، تحت إشراف أستاذ فاضل هو الدكتور محمد محمود السلاموني، ولا تزال ذاكرتي تحمل صوره وهو يشرح لنا بعض تعابير شيشرون عن الشيخوخة، وكيف أن الموت في الصبا أشبه بانتزاع ثمرة من شجرتها قبل نضوجها، على عكس الوفاة في سنّ الشيخوخة، حيث تسقط الثمار تلقائياً بعد نضوجها\". من عناوين الكتاب : \"الحياة النشيطة\"، \"الجسم والعقل\"، \"ملذات العيش\"، \"مباهج الزراعة\"، \"مكارم الشيخوخة\"، \"لا مدعاة للخوف من الموت\"
