تجري أحداث الرواية تباعا، في مليلية وإشبيلية وطنجة والدار البيضاء ومراكش، وذلك عقب فرار الشاعر من مصحة الأمراض النفسية بمليلية (حيث كان يعالج من انفصام الشخصية والانحرافات الأيديولوجية والجنسية) رفقة فتى من أصل ريفي مجند ضمن الجيش الأسباني، وذلك أثر إلغاء حكم بإعدامه صادر عن السلطات المتمردة. وكذلك فترة العزل والعلاج بالصدمات الكهربائية التي عاشها الشاعر، وهو في المصحة، تتشكل في مخيلته على هيئة ما لقيه المتهمون بارتكاب البدع الدينية من عنت وعنف على يد قضاة التفتيش في القرون الوسطى. هكذا يبدو الحاضر وكأنه يعكس سيولة ماض يتكرر دون انقطاع.
