لما كان جانب من المشكل اللساني العربي المعاصر أنه يقارب المرحلة المعاصرة مقطوعة الصلات عن مواردها ومصادرها ودون وعي كاف بتاريخ العلم ومكاننا من هذا التاريخ حاضره وغابرة ونظرا لخلاء الساحة وافتقار المكتبة العربية إلى مصنف يقوم بهذا الواجب على كثرة أمثاله وتنوعها في المكتبة الغربية. فيرصد لنا رحلة الفكر مع اللغة في دقة حميدة وموضوعية أمينة ومعمار منهجي رصين واستيعاب موفق وهو إذ يفعل إنما يستهل رحلته من البداية حتى يقف القارئ عن الخريطة المعاصرة لمذاهب علماء اللسان وأنظارهم البحثية وعقائدهم العلمية في معالجة الظاهرة اللسانية.
