Overview
In early December, third-year graduate students are put through four days of written and oral exams that cover over four hundred scholarly books. [...] all that day, while attending lectures and leading discussion sections, I mentally crossed items off my to-do list without doing them. The department didn't know about the novels I was writing (they still don't), because if children are considered a distraction from my real scholarly focus, god only knows what they would make of frivolous fantasy work-for-hire novels written to help pay for children.
