Overview
Different worldviews conceptualize accountability differently. Western models focus on legal responsibility, compensation, and punishment, while Indigenous perspectives, such as Te Ᾱo Maori, prioritize interconnectedness, historical context, and relationship restoration guided by lore. Maori accountability centers on harmony, healing, and collective mana protection, guided by reciprocity, and respect for all relationships. Accountability is seen as a continuous cycle, rooted in utu and muru, seeking the well-being of family, land, and the natural environment. Manaakitanga, or generosity without expectation of return, is key to maintaining societal balance. Genuine accountability in Aotearoa requires honoring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, restoring power to Maori, addressing ongoing injustices, fostering meaningful partnerships, and implementing restorative practices. The journey towards accountability involves continuous learning, reflection, and courageous action, with a focus on equity, mutual respect, and genuine partnership between Mari and non-Maori for a flourishing, just, and inclusive nation.
