Overview
After the 1966 article, the deliberate coining of the term less developed by economists of development provides eloquent evidence that Frank's paper had become uncomfortably influential. Here he interweaves his political and personal trajectory and quotes one of his 1988 articles: \"The socialist countries have failed to establish a division of labor and market as a viable alternative to the world capitalist one, either for themselves and even less for 'non capitalist development, socialist oriented' progressive Third World countries and liberation movements\" (1988:324). Whatever its deficiencies, if what that work did was restore to Asia some measure of its importance in world history in the view of academics, then for that alone he did more for social science than most of us can ever achieve.
