Published online: 10 March 2017 © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2017 The review article by Gupta et al. in a recent issue of Sports Medicine has provided the sleep and sport science community with a methodologically sound systematic review of the literature on sleep in elite athletes [1]. The review included research studies with multiple methods for assessing sleep including objective measures of polysomnography (PSG) and actigraphy, as well as subjective measures using questionnaires. The PSQI captures some elements of insomnia, but there are many other components not solely related to insomnia that contribute to the overall global score including total sleep time, sleep quality, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances, use of sleeping medication, and day-time dysfunction. Reliance on objective measurements such as PSG and actigraphy is fraught with error and misinterpretation when considering the clinical significance of sleep quality and sleep-related impairment symptomatology.
