Overview
This text was written in memoriam Dan Manuca who was a professor at the Faculty of Letters, “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iasi, and the director of “A. Philippide” Institute of Romanian Philology – the Iasi Branch of the Romanian Academy, between 1900 and 2012. His father, Mihai Manuca, an orthodox priest and a scholar, was deeply concerned with the education of his son who was taught French, German and English since childhood. The opportunity of learning foreign languages offered him a broad view of the West European culture. Dan Manuca was interested in studying M. Eminescu’s activity, as well as the activity of Junimea’s representatives and the work of Mathilde Kugler-Poni; he also collected information about professors Josef and Constantin Meissner from Bukovina, and focused generally on the German literature written in Bukovina. He was one of the authors and coordinators of Dicţionarul literaturii române de la origini până la 1900 [‘The Dictionary of the Romanian Literature from Its Origins to 1900’] and a collaborator to Dicţionarul general al literaturii române [The General Dictionary of the Romanian Literature]. He wrote monographs about M. Sadoveanu, L. Rebreanu, I. Al. Brătescu-Voineşti. Dan Manuca’s interest in the connections between the Romanian and the German literatures is emphasized by his activity of editing Iacob Negruzzi’s diary written when Negruzzi was a student in Berlin, as well as the memoirs of Constantin Sporea, a teacher of German; the same interest is revealed by his many articles about Mite Kremnitz and the German influences used by M. Eminescu.
