تستعرض الدراسة النزعة الشعبية في الشعر العباسي من خلال أربعة شعراء هم : أبو الشمقمق، الأحنف العكبري، أبو دلف الخزرجي، وأبو العبر الهاشمي. يهدف الكتاب إلى توضيح كيف أثر هذا التيار في الشعر العباسي، حيث أصبح يعبر عن معاناة العامة ويصور الحياة الاجتماعية بكل جوانبها. في الفصل الأول، يتم تناول مفهوم النزعة الشعبية وكيف أنها مثلت تحولا في الشعر، ليقترب من الحياة اليومية للطبقات الاجتماعية المختلفة، خاصة الطبقة الفقيرة التي تعاني من البؤس والفقر. يستعرض كيف أن هذه النزعة نتجت عن عوامل اجتماعية واقتصادية وسياسية أدت إلى تمايز بين طبقة الثراء وطبقة الفقراء. الفصل الثاني يركز على الشاعر أبو الشمقمق، الذي عبر بشعره عن بؤس حياته وشدة فقره، مع تقديم نماذج من شعره الذي يعكس شكواه الذاتية وتفاصيل حياته القاسية، مثل وصفه لبيته المجدب والمعاناة اليومية التي يعيشها.
