University library thieves read and rip
2004
Staff at the MacKimmie Library are reporting thefts of rare books and missing pages of survey and western geological map plates from the 1890s over the past year. \"To take maps or a couple of plates or whatever is kind of strange. You're stealing the history that we all deserve to be able to access,\" said Calgary Police Service Staff Sgt. Luch Berti, who says police were notified of the ripped-out pages May 31. Cameron Treleaven, owner of Aquila Books, said the maps missing from the university's books from the late 1800s fall short of the black market's demands for centuries-old cartography.

Colleton parents kept informed by autodialer
2006
Superintendent Charles Gale asked technology director Beth Frank to investigate phone-dialing systems after a 12-year-old Northside Elementary School student skipped school. Authorities say the girl took a flight to Mexico City with her 22-year-old cousin last month. Her parents didn't know she was missing until the end of the school day. The new program started last week. Frank said the district already has received positive responses from parents who have called the school after receiving the alerts about children missing class. Some bugs still need to be worked out, Frank said. It's important that the district have the correct home phone and alternative phone numbers for parents. She encouraged parents to contact the schools with that information, especially if they have yet to receive an automated call from the district.

1993
Oldfields rebounded from an 0-11 record in 1989 to 11-2 in 1993. [Beth Franks]' team capped the turnaround this spring by winning the B Division Tournament championship, 9-8, over Institute of Notre Dame. Winning a title, even in the B Division, is a tougher task for Franks and her players than most in the AIS, because Oldfields, in northern Baltimore County, is a boarding school. This year's varsity included players from eight states, Washington, D.C., Colombia and Japan. Franks also scheduled a couple of invitational tournaments, and gradually Oldfields improved. The players wanted to return to AIS competition, and Franks agreed.
