GUTSY RAMAPO FALLS JUST SHORT
\"We did a very good job in saber and they were very tough in foil, so it all came down to epee and they pushed through with some late wins. But overall we put up a pretty strong effort,\" Ramapo coach Paul Apostol said. \"If we had maybe one or two of those early bouts go the other way, it could have been a different story.\" Ramapo (11-3), which had defeated Pingry, 16-11, in the opening round last week, looked as if it might advance to the final four for the first time in five years, as it took an 8-4 advantage after the second round of saber. After Ridge had tied it at 9, [Gregory Duch] and Gorloff (5-3 wins) and [Adam Carcione] (5-0) powered the Raiders to a 12-9 lead. But Ridge rallied back as victories by [Tang], Shadpoor and [Mark Simeon] made it 12-all going into the third and decisive epee round.
NZ shark victim discharges himself
The New Zealand man attacked by a shark in the Galapagos Islands has discharged himself from hospital, angry at the care he received. Wellington man Sam Judd was surfing on outlying San Cristobal Island on Friday when a shark bit his thigh. Mr Judd managed to punch the shark away but was left bleeding and in shock. \"I knew I was bleeding and I thought `if that has another go, it's not going to be good, so I just want to get out',\" he said. He then clambered 400m along the rocks with bite marks on both thighs. His two mates got him to hospital, where a further surprise awaited; one had to run 2km to get money for medical supplies before they would start treating Mr Judd. \"They didn't have the supplies there in the hospital,\" he said. \"I said `I've got travel insurance, this is all going to be paid off, just pull the stuff out and stitch me up'.\" \"I was a little bit angry with that whole situation.\" Mr Judd was recovering at his rented cottage with his friends - and planned to stay on in the area.
SENATOBIA MINISTRY CASTS TEENS AS `HANDS OF CHRIST
Earlier this week, [Sam Judd] was on her knees, brushing damp sand from the sun-warmed surface of a newly laid section of concrete walkway at Wesley Meadows Retirement Community in Hernando. Judd, 15, was one of about a dozen Methodist youth and youth leaders who gave their time this week working at the facility as part of MYHOP - Methodist Youth Helping Other People - a yearly mission project coordinated by the Senatobia United Methodist Church. In her third summer working with MYHOP, Judd, a member of Fulton United Methodist Church, said she's accustomed to working with the elderly and is familiar with Wesley Meadows. Last summer, her group was assigned to the center, and though rain hampered their plans for outdoor work, she said she enjoyed getting to know the residents.
Dedication in action ; Painted Sky elementary fifth-grade teacher -- and 45-year veteran in the field -- loved the job too much to stay away
[Glorya Candelaria Pitts], who will be 69 in February and is in her 46th year of teaching, recently opened up her annual Democracy in Action class elections, inviting parents to listen to the political speeches of aspiring presidents, treasurers, secretaries and public relations directors. Pitts' hair, still thick, long and black, is only starting to be accented with silver streaks. The grandmother of three and greatgrandmother of one led the class in a fitted, pin-striped black pantsuit, with chains of pearls hanging from her ears and manicured hands. ALL-NORTH JERSEY BOYS FENCING
[Khalil Thompson] was a silver medalist at the state tournament and took first at the District 4 tournament. He was 25-4 this season and finished third at District 4 and sixth at the states in 2012 with a two-year, 50-9 mark. \"Khalil's a very agile, classical saber fencer,\" said Teaneck coach Herb Cohen. \"He's famous for his strong parry-riposte actions.\" [Blake Ballin] went 29-13 in dual meets this season and was 62-35 overall, claiming silver at District 4 and 11th at the state tournament. \"Blake was the squad captain and a very good leader,\" said West Milford coach Lou DeVito. \"He really improved his game in a variety of ways this season.\" Hackett was 24-18 in dual meets, 47-46 overall, fifth at districts and 20th at the states. \"[Jesse Hackett]'s stop-thrust move on the strip earned him a lot of important touches,\" said West Milford coach Lou DeVito. \"He definitely will be an important part of our foil squad again next year.\"
Oprah' to air appearance of student from MDI High
[Sam Judd]'s appearance is scheduled first on the hour-long broadcast about the role of public schools in providing information about sex and contraceptives. Judd's on-air debate is with a college freshman who graduated from an all-girls religious school and adamantly opposes making contraceptives available before marriage. The MDI student presents the opposing point of view. Judd contends teenagers should be encouraged to practice abstinence but argues not everyone will adhere to that message. Using the experience of his high school as an example, Judd argues making condoms available will help protect from HIV infection those who choose to have sex.
Students defend school's condom program on Oprah
Barely 24 hours after their elegant breakfast in the Chicago hotel, a limousine tour of the Lake Michigan metropolis, and debate with Oprah Winfrey, Shannon Hughes and Sam Judd unpacked their backpacks and returned to classes at MDI High School, still reeling from the tinsel of a near-Hollywood experience. When the Oprah show asked the center for recommendations for persons to debate the role of public schools in providing information on sex and contraception, the names of Judd and Hughes were at the top of the list. Now home, with a \"Thanks from Oprah\" mug and an autographed picture on the way, Judd and Hughes are turning their attention to a different audience out of the limelight. Their next stage may be in the classrooms of those not yet old enough to enter high school, encouraging them to start thinking now about learning to say \"no\" and to act responsibly.
