Pell angers Muslims, environmentalists
2006
\"I think there will be many Catholics out there who'll be cringing when they hear these comments, and they'll be saying 'what happened to the legacy of Pope John Paul II? The Catholic Church is being changed from the top and not necessarily for the better'.\" \"I think it's unfortunate that Cardinal Pell refers to a pagan emptiness and western fears about global warming as being hysteric and extreme,\" she said. \"He must also be aware that there's a very strong view in the Catholic faith across the world that we need to recognise that we are stewards of God's earth and therefore have a responsibility to maintain it in its pristine form.\"

Pell has got Islam wrong
2004
Cardinal George Pell, who is also Archbishop of Sydney, said in a speech in the US last month that Islam might this century provide the attraction that communism provided in the last. A spokesman for the Mufti of Australia Taj Aldin Alhilali, Keysar Trad, said Dr Pell's comments showed he did not sufficiently understand the teachings of Islam. \"Islam is not the new communism,\" he said. \"To draw parallels between Islam and a godless system is unfortunate.\"

Fed: Brandis would face jail for lying rodent comments: Trad
2005
A Queensland Liberal Party official last year claimed Liberal Senator George Brandis had once described Prime Minister John Howard as a lying rodent over the children overboard affair. Senator Brandis denied the allegation, but Islamic Friendship Association of Australia president Keysar Trad today said the government backbencher would face jail over the comments under the proposed new anti-terror laws. He told ABC television's Lateline program on Friday he sympathised with Victorian Liberal MP Petro Georgiou's calls for the measures to have proper safeguards built in.

Fed: Different faiths mourn death of Pope
2005
SYDNEY, April 3 AAP - Australians of different faiths were mourning the death of the Pope, with Muslim and Jewish leaders in Sydney expressing their sympathy today. Lebanese Muslim Association president Keysar Trad said it was with great sadness the Muslim community received news of the death of Pope John Paul II. In 1986, Pope John Paul II became the first Catholic pontiff to visit a Jewish place of worship when he attended the Synagogue of Rome, Mr [George Newhouse] said.

Islam is the new communism: Pell; Islam is the new communism: Pell
2004
EXCERPT OF [George Pell] SPEECH: The small but growing conversion of native Westerners within Western societies to Islam carries the suggestion that Islam may provide in the 21st century, the attraction that communism provided in the 20th, both for those that are alienated and embittered on the one hand and for those who seek order or justice on the other. [Keysar Trad]: It's totally unfair to compare the interests of Islam with the interest in communism in the last century, because communism is a godless system, a system that in fact persecutes faith. [Toni Hassan]: Is there some currency to Cardinal Pell's comments that there's an appeal in Islam, a similar appeal that existed for many who were drawn to communism?

NSW:Sheik says he'll resign when world is rid of the White House
2006
CLERIC WHITEHOUSE SYDNEY, Oct 27 AAP - Australia's leading Muslim cleric, Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali, says he will only resign when the world is \"clean of the White House\". After emerging from Friday prayers at Lakemba Mosque today, Sheik Alhilali was asked by a media pack whether he would quit over a speech in which he said scantily-dressed women invited rape. \"After we clean the world of the White House first,\" the sheik said. Supporters of the sheik cheered and applauded loudly at the comments, which were directed firmly at US President George W Bush. The sheik has previously described Mr Bush, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Prime Minister John Howard as the axis of evil. Despite calls from within the Islamic community for his resignation, Sheik Alhilali has been assured he has the support of grass-roots Muslims, a supporter said.

Fed: I'll quit when the White House goes says sheik
2006
CLERIC NIGHTLEAD (PIX AVAILABLE) By Paul Mulvey SYDNEY, Oct 27 AAP - A defiant Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali says he will only resign when the world is \"clean of the White House\". Under pressure to step down following his comments suggesting immodestly dressed women invite sexual assault, Australia's leading Muslim cleric did nothing to ease simmering tensions today. After emerging from Friday prayers at Sydney's Lakemba Mosque surrounded by dozens of followers, Sheik Alhilali was asked by a media pack whether he would quit. \"After we clean the world of the White House first,\" the sheik said before being ushered into a waiting car. His supporters cheered and applauded loudly at the salvo aimed squarely at US President George W Bush and indirectly at Prime Minister John Howard. The sheik has previously described Mr Bush, Mr Howard and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair as the \"axis of evil\" and has been accused of applauding suicide bombers in the past. Mr Howard would not comment on the sheik's White House barb, but had earlier warned that the Muslim leader's actions could cause a lasting backlash against Muslims, a fear echoed by many Islamic groups.
