Deputy still in critical condition: Mathews hit deer on I-79 Tuesday
[Shawn Mathews] was thrown from his patrol vehicle about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday when the Dodge Durango struck a deer on Interstate 79 north near the Kingmont exit (milemarker 133), State Police Trooper E.M. Boyle said. When the Dodge hit the deer, Boyle said, it skidded into the median divider, then flipped and rolled, coming to rest on its roof. Mathews was thrown from the vehicle into the southbound lanes.

Deputy in critical condition: Marion officer's SUV hits deer on I- 79
Deputy Shawn Mathews, 35, of Fairmont, was on routine patrol traveling north on I-79 when he struck a deer in the passing lane, said Trooper E.M. Boyle, with the State Police detachment in Fairmont. Boyle said he's not sure if the deer was standing in the interstate or if it jumped out in front of the Dodge Durango patrol cruiser that Mathews drove. He said he does not know if Mathews was wearing a seat belt or how fast he was going, as the accident remains under investigation.Boyle said hitting a deer on the interstate while driving the speed limit (in some areas up to 70 mph) is comparable to hitting a brick wall.\"I've seen 150-pound deer destroy vehicles that are smaller than SUVs,\" he said.\"You always have to watch out for deer on West Virginia roads. One could jump across the road at any time. And always keep your seat belt on.\"
State briefs
David Allen Hicks, 36, of Charleston was charged with three counts of production of child pornography, two counts of possession of child porn and one count each of receipt of child porn, interstate travel to engage in a sexual act with a minor and transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, according to the indictment. The indictment also alleges that around July 2004, Hicks traveled from Cross Lanes to South Carolina with the intent of engaging in a sexual act with a child under the age of 12. On Sept. 11, 2004, he allegedly got a digital video image of child porn that was later found on his hard drive and computer disks.
Two men drown in Tygart River
VALLEY FALLS STATE PARK Two brothers, both Mexican citizens, drowned when one fell into the Tygart River below a set of falls and the other jumped in to try and save him, authorities said. Their identities are being withheld until their families can be notified, police said. The men appeared to be in their mid- to late-20s, said Detective Shawn Mathews of the Marion Sheriffs department. Apparently one man was trying to cross the rocks (over the falls) when one fell in and the other went after him, Mathews said. The wife of one of the men and her son, about 2, spoke only Spanish, he said. The family had just come to the area from Washington state three weeks ago looking for a job. The mans younger brother had been working in Fairmont for about three years, the detective said. When efforts to revive him stopped, Mathews quietly told her he had died.

Police briefs
The Marion County Deputy Sheriff's Association set up the Shawn K. Mathews Fund at the Monongahela Valley Bank, 301 Virginia Ave., in Fairmont, said Deputy Matt Love. The bank's phone number is 363- 4800. Mathews was driving north on Interstate 79 near the Kingmont exit when he struck a deer in the passing lane, according to State Police. The cruiser ran off the left side of the road into the median and rolled over at least twice, ejecting Mathews onto the southbound lanes of I-79. Charlotte Dee Hampton had been a fugitive since she failed to appear in Kanawha Circuit Court on Nov. 11, 2005, according to the marshals' statement. Hampton faces charges of first-degree arson, burglary, and entering without breaking stemming from a series of incidents in 2004.
Yakima Speedway -- Apple Cup -- Crashing into Victory Lane -- Mathews wrecked in preliminaries, came back to win 1997 Apple Cup
Short of something that would bring his weekend to a complete and early halt - like the dreaded wheel-it-in-the-pits dead engine - Shawn Mathews might not mind if something bad happened Saturday during the preliminaries of the Yakima Speedway's 36th annual Apple Cup. Even in a no-holds-barred event like the Apple Cup, Mathews has learned a lesson or two about pushing too hard. Two years ago, he appeared well on his way to another Apple Cup victory when a wrong decision cost him the checkered flag. Mathews might be a bit more delicate this weekend while driving a car owned by Richard Berkta of Yakima's LP Body Shop. LP is owned by the family of frequent stock-car race Gary Poulson, who has a Late Model car that Mathews plans to race this summer.

MAN IN RP SLAYINGS TO STAY IN HOSPITAL ; JUDGE REJECTS DEFENDANT'S BID TO BE RELEASED FROM MENTAL HOSPITAL
On Wednesday, [Thomas Cushing] said [Mathew Shawn Beck] has a history of drug abuse, fights, arrests and problems relating to women. He said Beck no longer shows psychotic symptoms, but his anti-social behavior continued at Napa, where Beck assaulted another patient, used illegal drugs and had inappropriate sexual relations with female staff members. Doctors at Napa State Hospital had recommended that Beck, 31, be released to a community treatment program. During a two-day hearing, they said Beck has done well in the hospital's treatment program and wasn't likely to offend again.
