Regretting move, UBS seeks return to New York
2011
\"A key piece of the mayor's economic strategy has been to make New York City a place people want to be,\" Deputy Mayor Robert K. Steel said, \"and more than ever the city is the ideal location for any company, like UBS, that succeeds by attracting a talented, motivated work force.\" \"I mean, it's annoying,\" said the trader, who asked that his name not be used because he was not authorized to speak about the possible relocation. \"It's not a terrible commute. But it's not ideal.\" The trip takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how many stops the train makes. In wooing UBS, New York City landlords have tried to capitalize on Connecticut's recent decision to raise taxes to help balance the state budget, which has been criticized by some business groups. But it did not appear that UBS's interest in moving stemmed from the tax increases. The firm's review of its real estate needs began many months ago.

2013
A 50-minute drive away from Manhattan, the US city of Stamford in the state of Connecticut has long been known only in terms of its proximity to New York City. But now it has a bold ambition: to become a business hub in its own right, rather than just a satellite to New York City.

The Pavia era
Under outgoing Mayor Dan Malloy and his economic development chief Michael Freimuth, Stamford mustered a steady drumbeat of upbeat news, including Royal Bank of Scotland bringing more than 2,000 jobs to the city; the construction of Harbor Point in the South End and related improvements; and the construction of significant amounts of multi-unit housing, including the Trump Parc luxury residential high rise that now dominates the city skyline, On the downbeat side for Malloy's mayoral run, residents were outraged at their residential tax burden following the city's most recent property revaluation, supposing their tax burden would be lightened in light of the city's impressive commercial developments. [...] even as RBS and other large companies moved into Stamford, others left, including International Paper and Meadwestvaco to other states, and Xerox Corp. and Commercial Finance up the road to Norwalk.

2011
\"I'm honored to serve and, I think, to serve a great cause like the city that you are born in, the city that really made you what you are,\" [Bobby Valentine] said. \"To be able to look back at the accomplishments of my life and know I've done well, and now the thought of trying to do good in a very public way, I think, is a very exciting challenge in my life.\" Valentine, a Stamford product who owns a popular downtown bar, Bobby Valentine's Sports Gallery Cafe, was appointed by [Michael Pavia] last year to oversee a Stamford task force charged with streamlining the city's fire service. Pavia said that Valentine, who led the Mets to the 2000 World Series, had handled the job well. \"When Mike said that he needed a little help at managing some of the services, managing some of the people, and he thought that my master's in the school of hard knocks or my Ph.D. in life might be able to facilitate the progress of our city, I said, 'Well, let's give it a try,' \" Valentine said. \"So, I'm honored.\"
