Exabyte Assures Supply of SmartClean AME Cartridges for Mammoth-2; Agreement with Matsushita Secures Cost Effective Media in M2
BOULDER, Colo., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Exabyte Corporation (Nasdaq: EXBT), a performance leader in network storage, today announced it has finalized an agreement with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (MEI) of Osaka, Japan, under which MEI will be the primary supplier of SmartClean(TM) AME (Advanced Metal Evaporated) cartridges for Exabyte's new Mammoth-2 (M2) tape drive. MEI's thin media, used in consumer applications, incorporates Exabyte's SmartClean technology to support the high capacity and reliability of M2. \"Utilizing consumer-based media provides users a great economic advantage on their media investment over the long term,\" said Ken Cruden, director of marketing at Exabyte. \"MEI has been in volume production for more than 18 months, supplying the market with this media, so we are assured of a significant supply to meet the high demand forecasted for M2 drives and libraries. Because MEI has worked with our development team since the beginning, Exabyte's SmartClean technology is incorporated in the cartridge configuration adding to the M2's robust reliability.\" To become a source for Exabyte media, MEI had to achieve additional performance and process requirements. Exabyte requires tests on parameters beyond normal consumer requirements, and a certification process to ensure system performance in M2. Upon completion of all requirements, the tape cartridge receives the Exabyte Recognition Systems logo to identify this certification for our customers.
Case for ghostbusters?
The resurrection of [Sergei Rachmaninoff], as well as other classical and jazz piano greats, comes courtesy of Zenph Studios in Raleigh, N.C. They made news last year with a technology that takes historic recordings, cleans them up, and then programs them into a Disklavier, a computerized grand piano that will play, for example, exactly what Rachmaninoff played and recorded as if he were sitting there playing. A typical reaction from the classical world to the Zenph breakthrough is that of Julian Kreeger, South Florida's major chamber music presenter and a record producer -- when he's not practicing his profession, the law. He points out that classical pianists favored different kinds of pianos, while the Disklavier is only one. Is artistry sacrificed for the sake of perfection? Kreeger plays a 1931 recording by Vladimir Horowitz of Lizst's Liebestraum. \"He played more wrong notes than right ones,\" Kreeger says when it's over. \"But it's an exciting performance.\"
