Overview
ينطلق زمن الرواية من عام 1866، حيث بدأت الأحداث بقيام بيير أوروناكس الأستاذ المساعد في متحف التاريخ، بالبحث عن الوحش المجهول الذي يغرق السفن في أعالي البحار، حيث تعرضت السفينة مورافيا لهجمة أحدثت بها ثقبا، وأثناء سفره إلى الولايات المتحدة مع خادمه تعرضت السفينة سكوتيا التي يستقلها لنفس الخطر، وبعد أن انتشر الخبر قامت الحكومة الأميركية بإرسال سفينة حربية معه لتتبع هذا الوحش وقتله، وبعد مطاردة طويلة، تعرف بيير على الفرنسي نيد، الذي رصد الوحش، وقام بتصويب الطلقات نحوه حتى اختفي، ولكن هذا الوحش غطس أسفل السفنينة التي تطارده، ثم ضربها فأحدث بها رجة كبيرة، وثقبا تمت السيطرة عليه.
