IN 1988, U.S. cigarette manufacturers spent $3.27 billion on cigarette advertising and promotion, the equivalent of $100 per second. Eleven percent of that amount, or $355 million, was devoted to magazine advertising, making cigarettes the second most heavily advertised product in this medium.

Health professionals and critics of journalism have charged that magazines that depend on revenue from cigarette advertisements are less likely than others to publish articles dealing with the hazards of smoking for fear of offending cigarette manufacturers
