Overview
Indoor sources of particulate air pollution can have significant health effects and are of broad concern. One potential source which has been identified is fuel-fired heating equipment. This study is specifically focused on liquid fuel-fired heaters as a potential source of indoor particulates. Most liquid fuel-fired heaters have flue barometric dampers which could potentially be a source of indoor particulate matter (PM) under cyclic operation. Low-cost PM sensors were deployed in 8 homes close to the heater and in other locations including the kitchen, near fireplaces, and outdoors. A key goal was to evaluate the relative importance of the liquid-fuel fired heater. The results showed a very strong impact on indoor PM of cooking operations (e.g. frying), indoor wood combustion, and outdoor peaks in PM. The liquid fuel-fired heaters were not found to be a significant source.
