Former San Jose officer alleges rampant time-card fraud
2012
Such fraud, he said, was widespread and enabled by a practice in which the schedules for teams of officers overlapped on Wednesdays each week, leaving the airport overstaffed on what they called a \"hole day\" in which he said \"a team would have the expectation of doing absolutely nothing.\" \"Among other things,\" [Thomas Correa] alleged in court papers, \"this would involve hours and hours of mountain-bike racing, weight-lifting, jogging, exercising, long dinner breaks somehere in the city, taking the city van to mountain-bike races at the Los Gatos Creek trails, movie nights, etc.\"

FORMER EDUCATOR GETS 2-YEAR TERM
2012
\"When you decided 'I'm not only going to commit this crime, I'm going to get on the [witness] stand and lie about it' to get out of the hot water you got yourself into ... all the goodwill goes out the window, as far as I'm concerned,\" U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra told [Thomas Correa] during the sentencing hearing Tuesday in West Palm Beach. Correa, 48, of Plantation, is on leave from his job as assistant principal at Lanier-James Education Center in Hallandale Beach, and expects to be terminated shortly, according to his attorney, Dave Bogenschutz. A jury found Correa guilty of conspiring to commit bank fraud and making false statements. \"I never thought in a million years that I'd ever find myself in a situation like this,\" he told the judge. \"I've made some poor choices, allowing myself to associate with people who were bad people.\"

JUDGE: NO NEW TRIAL FOR BROWARD TEACHER CONVICTED OF BANK FRAUD
2012
During [Thomas Correa]'s trial last fall, there was testimony about a July 2009 meeting between Correa and a witness that was recorded without Correa's knowledge. Correa's friend also alleged that she had encountered an alternate juror at a mall after the verdict and the woman told her that several jurors improperly discussed the evidence before deliberations began. The woman also said jurors speculated about the editing of the tapes and suggesting \"it must have shown [Correa's] guilt.\" [Kenneth Marra] also rejected Correa's request for a new trial regarding the allegation that jurors discussed the evidence before deliberating, which he had warned them was not allowed.

DEFENSE FOR PRINCIPAL ALLEGES JUROR MISCONDUCT
2012
Jurors heard trial testimony about a July 2009 meeting between [Thomas Correa] and a witness that was filmed without Correa's knowledge. Correa's defense lawyer, Dave Bogenschutz, wrote that if jurors saw the full DVD, it may have affected their verdict because the defense had no opportunity to question witnesses or challenge what appeared on the video. The alternate juror claimed that \"several of the jurors had been speaking and talking about the case before she was released and before deliberations\" began. If true, that would have violated the judge's daily orders to jurors not to discuss the case or reach any conclusion before hearing the full case and his legal instructions.

PRINCIPAL MAY GET A NEW TRIAL
\"A major point, according to the alternate juror, related to the redaction of one of the tapes, and that jurors were speculating that the redaction occurred because it must have shown [Correa's] guilt,\" according to a sworn statement from Correa's friend.

BUSINESSMAN PLEADS GUILTY TO BRIBERY
2011
Francis Santa admitted orchestrating what federal prosecutors have described as an unique form of fraud: enlisting corrupt bankers to approve business loans for clients with poor credit histories. Santa and his employees at Palm Beach Business Consultants attempted to push through more than $10 million in bogus loans and lines of credit since the firm opened in 2003, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. After federal authorities caught on to Santa's scheme, he began working with them and agreed to introduce an undercover FBI agent to the bankers.
