Hallifax, Rick
2007
Hallifax is celebrating its 50th anniversary having grown out of another company, H. G. Roberts. In the early 1970s [Rick Hallifax]'s father, [Peter Hallifax], changed the company's focus on anti-rust and lubricating fluids into the new market of souvenirs. Lanolin is derived from sheep wool, and that business was partly inspired by the family of Rick's mother, Helen Johnstone, coming from the Erewhon sheep station near the headwaters of the Rangitata.

Festival Arts: VISUAL ARTS - Portrait painter in the frame ; TOM HALLIFAX @ ULSTER MUSEUM
by
Hill, Ian

Hallifax, Tom
2001
IT'S TOUGH painting women, said the distinguished portrait painter [TOM HALLIFAX] lecturing in the Ulster Museum. For society places so much emphasis on a woman's beauty it can be difficult to reconcile how he sees a woman and her own image of herself. Tom's Top Tips? Don't draw first in pencil, its too confining. Use a brush five times the width you first thought of. Confine your palette to three colours. And tips for sitters? Keep talking, lest your muscles sag over the five hours.

Voters to decide on state revenue limit
1994
Support and opposition were evenly divided in the latest poll. Thirty-one percent of the 809 voters surveyed by Mason-Dixon PoliticalMedia Research Inc. said they would vote for Amendment Two. Thirty-one percent said they would not. Spurred by petition drives for stricter spending caps, state lawmakers took action this spring. They drafted Amendment Two, with input from Florida TaxWatch Inc. and former leaders of the Tax and Budget Reform Commission, and put the measure on the ballot.

Florida voters to decide fate of five amendments
1994
A few dozen supporters _ notably the companies guaranteed or hoping to get permits _ have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to sell the idea of casinos, which Floridians rejected in 1978 and 1986. Probably as passionate a debate _ although not as visible _ is the fight over fishing nets. Lawmakers will be able to disregard the cap with a two-thirds vote and some significant parts of the state budget _ such as the state money needed to receive matching federal dollars for Medicaid _ will be exempted.

Initiatives fall short of names, court approval
1994
To make the ballot by citizen initiatives, groups must collect voter signatures to equal 10 percent of the turnout in the last presidential election _ and must reach the 10 percent threshold in half the state's 23 congressional districts. ``It looks like we're going to fall short,'' said Lee Ann Franceschi, executive director of the campaign. Leaders of two other casino proposals say they've collected enough signatures and are now waiting for the elections officials to process them. The fourth casino campaign acknowledged weeks ago that it was unlikely it would meet the signature deadline for the 1994 ballot.

Agenda 2001: Ex-Lord Mayor in the frame
2001
The painting by Tom Hallifax was handed over to Mr [Sammy Wilson] and present post-holder Jim Rodgers at a ceremony in the Lord Mayor's parlour prior to it being installed outside the council chamber. A clearly delighted Mr Wilson said: \"Tom Hallifax is one of the up- and-coming portrait artists of our time and I was extremely pleased he was commissioned for the painting. One of his best-known portraits, a private commission for the Prince of Wales, is of the late Derek Hill, whose own portrait of another former Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alban Maginness, is on loan to the Ulster Museum for an exhibition opening on December 6.
