Well before the Romantic era, British writers found it worth their while to mine exotic romances from the East. The Frenchman Antoine Galland started the fashion for such literary Orientalism withMille et une nuit(1704–17), translated from Arabic and Englished by 1706 asThe Thousand and One Nights. Its popularity brought plenty of imitations to Britain’s expanding print market: Turkish, Persian, Chinese, ‘Mogul’ and ‘Tartarian’ tales.
